The A’s defeated the Yankees on a bottom of the ninth two out 3 run homerun by Marco Scutaro off of Mariano Rivera. Before the homerun Scutaro was 1-for-20 on the season with a batting average of .050.
After the game the Yankees placed Mike Mussina and Carl Pavano on the 15 day DL adding even more woes to a pitching staff that has been awful to this point. Chris Britton from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Chase Wright — who leads the Eastern League with 19 strikeouts in 14 scoreless innings and is already on the 40-man roster — will be recalled in time to start on Tuesday against the Indians. The Boss cannot be happy…Sox fans are exstatic!!
The Toronto Blue Jays placed closer B.J. Ryan in the DL with elbow soreness. Ryan blew his second save of the year Saturday and Ryan is 0-2 with a 12.46 ERA with three saves in five opportunities for the season. Initial tests performed by Toronto’s medical staff didn’t indicate any structural damage, according to Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi. Ricciardi would not rule out the possibility that the left-hander might have to undergo season ending Tommy John elbow-ligament replacement surgery. Dont be surprised to see the Jays enter the trade market to fill the closers role with Lidge and Otsuka possible trade bait.
Bartolo Colon made what appears to be his final rehab start pitching for Triple-A Salt Lake in Las Vegas against the Dodgers’ Pacific Coast League affiliate, Colon pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up three hits and one walk while striking out three. He threw 95 pitches, 68 for strikes. Look for Colon to start next week against the Mariners. The Angels also get Jered Weaver back tomorrow.
